Most of what people call a virus today is one of three things: adware and browser hijackers that came bundled with free software, a fake "your computer is infected" pop-up designed to make you call a scammer, or a real remote-access tool left behind after a scammer got on the machine. All three are fixable, and your files almost always survive.

We remove the malicious software and any remote-access tools, reset the browser, check startup items and scheduled tasks, update the system, and confirm that the built-in protection is on and working. Then we secure the accounts that matter: email, banking, and anything a scammer might have seen.

If a scammer had access, there's urgent work beyond the computer. Call your bank's fraud line using the number on your card, change passwords from a clean device, and turn on two-step verification. We'll walk you through it, step by step.

Call us now if…

  • a pop-up or a caller says your computer is infected and gives you a number
  • you let someone you didn't know onto your computer
  • your browser homepage or search engine changed on its own
  • friends are getting strange emails from your account
  • you see apps or extensions you didn't install
That sounds like mine →

NEW YORK / WHAT WE SEE ON CALLS

The scams hitting New Yorkers.

NYC / 01

Fake tech support

Pop-ups and calls claiming to be Microsoft, Apple, or Geek Squad. Real companies don't call you about viruses.

NYC / 02

Toll and ticket texts

E-ZPass, parking ticket, and DMV texts lead to fake payment pages. Our forum has a step-by-step if you clicked.

NYC / 03

Utility shutoff calls

“Con Ed will cut your power in 30 minutes” calls demand payment by gift card or app. Hang up and call the number on your bill.

FAQ / VIRUS & SCAM REMOVAL

Virus & scam removal questions, answered.

How much does virus removal cost?

Most cleanups are done remotely at $79 an hour with a 30-minute minimum, and you get a flat quote before we start. If the computer can't get online or needs deeper work, on-site visits are $129 an hour and bench repair is $149 flat.

A pop-up says my computer is infected. Is it real?

Almost certainly not. Real security software doesn't show a phone number and tell you to call. Don't call the number. Close the browser — if it won't close, restart the computer — and contact us if it keeps coming back.

How do I know if my computer has a virus?

Common signs are new pop-ups, a homepage or search engine that changed by itself, programs you didn't install, a computer that's suddenly much slower or runs its fan constantly, and friends receiving odd messages from you. Some malware shows no signs, which is why a check is worthwhile after any scam.

Do I need to buy antivirus?

For most homes, no. Windows has Microsoft Defender built in and Macs have their own built-in protections, and both are good when they're up to date. What matters more is updates, two-step verification on important accounts, and not installing things from pop-ups. Businesses benefit from managed endpoint protection.

A scammer had remote access to my computer. What now?

Disconnect the computer from the internet. From a different device, call your bank's fraud line using the number on your card, then change your email and banking passwords and turn on two-step verification. Then have the computer cleaned to remove any remote-access tools before you use it again.

Will I lose my files?

Very rarely. Virus and scam cleanups keep your files and programs in place. If a full reinstall is ever the safer option, we back up your files first and ask before doing it.
