Most data loss is recoverable without a cleanroom: a laptop that won't boot but has a healthy drive, a corrupted external drive, files deleted from a computer that hasn't been used much since, or a drive that's failing slowly. We handle those cases at the bench, working from a copy whenever possible so the original isn't stressed further.
Some failures need a specialist lab: drives that click or grind, drives that were dropped while running, and some SSD and board failures. Recovery there involves opening the drive in a cleanroom and costs a lot more. When we see those signs, we stop, explain what we see, and point you to a lab with a quote before anything ships — instead of running tools that can make it worse.
Then we fix the reason you needed us. Once your files are back, we set up a real backup — not just sync — so the next dead drive is a minor inconvenience.
Stop and call us if…
- the drive is clicking, grinding, or beeping — power it off now
- files vanished and you're tempted to install recovery software on the same drive
- a laptop won't boot but you need what's on it
- an external drive asks to be formatted
- a phone died and you're not sure it was backed up

Clicking, grinding, and physically damaged drives go to a cleanroom with a quote first
Backup setup after
A tested backup so it doesn't happen twice
NEW YORK / WHAT WE SEE ON CALLS
How New Yorkers lose data.
Basement floods
Storms flood basement apartments and storage rooms. Water-damaged drives can sometimes be recovered — but only if no one tries to power them on first.
Snatched phones
When a phone is stolen, the data's only as safe as the last backup. We help recover from iCloud or Google and lock down accounts.
Surges after outages
Restore spikes after summer brownouts kill drives and power supplies. Recovery first, then a UPS.

FAQ / DATA RECOVERY
Data recovery questions, answered.
How much does data recovery cost?
Triage is free. A bench recovery attempt is $149 flat plus a drive to put your files on. If the drive needs a cleanroom lab because it's clicking or physically damaged, the lab quotes it before anything ships, and that type of recovery costs significantly more.
My hard drive is clicking. What should I do?
Turn it off and leave it off. A clicking drive usually has a mechanical problem, and every minute it runs can damage the platters and reduce what can be recovered. Don't run recovery software on it. Call us and we'll tell you whether it needs a cleanroom lab.
Can you recover deleted files?
Often, if the space hasn't been overwritten. Stop using the drive or memory card right away, and don't install recovery software onto it. SSDs are harder because they erase deleted data automatically in the background, so speed matters.
Can data be recovered from a phone that won't turn on?
Sometimes the phone can be repaired enough to boot, but modern phones are encrypted, so recovery without the phone working usually isn't possible. The realistic path is usually an iCloud, Google, or computer backup. We'll check what backups exist and recover from them.
Is it safe to give you my drive?
We handle every drive as confidential, work from a copy whenever possible, and only look for the files you ask us to recover. Your drive comes back to you, or is securely wiped if you prefer.

Spilled water or coffee on your laptop? What to do in the first 60 minutes
A spill doesn't have to kill a laptop — what you do in the next hour decides it. Power off, don't test it, skip the rice, and get it opened and dried. Step by step, for Macs and PCs.
iCloud, OneDrive, and Google Drive are not backups — the 3-2-1 rule in plain English
Cloud sync keeps every copy the same — including the deleted and encrypted ones. Here's why sync isn't a backup, how the 3-2-1 rule works, and the simple setup we use for homes and offices.
