CRASH TEST / YOUR BUSINESS VS. A VILLAIN

Break it here, not for real.

THE SCIENCE / WHY THE NUMBERS LOOK LIKE THAT

The file is never the expensive part.

When something goes wrong, the bill rarely comes from the broken laptop. It comes from the hours your team can't work, the customers who can't reach you, the money a scammer walked off with, and the clients who quietly go somewhere else. That's why the Crash Test counts all of it, side by side.

Sync is not backup

iCloud, OneDrive, Google Drive, and Dropbox sync: they make every copy match. Great when you edit on two devices. Terrible when ransomware encrypts your files or someone deletes the wrong folder, because the damage syncs too. A real backup is versioned (you can go back to last Tuesday), offsite (out of reach of floods, thieves, and malware on your network), and tested (someone has actually restored from it).

The New York part

  • The SHIELD Act. If private information about New Yorkers (Social Security numbers, account numbers, a username plus password, and more) is breached, New York law requires notifying the people affected. Data that was encrypted, with the key not taken, generally doesn't count as breached.
  • HIPAA. Medical and dental offices also have to notify patients and report breaches to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Heat waves and basements. Summer brownouts, surges when power snaps back, and gear living on basement floors are everyday risks here. A battery backup and a shelf fix most of it.

The cheap fixes that change the outcome most

2-step login on email and banking. Versioned offsite backups that someone tests. Managed antivirus that isolates a machine instead of just logging a warning. Encrypted laptops with remote wipe. A written "who to call" plan. And a rule that nobody changes payment details based on an email alone.

The Crash Test is an estimate built from your inputs and simple, disclosed assumptions (open "How we estimate" on your damage report). It's not a quote or a prediction. Real incidents vary; that's why we check your actual setup.
