Optimum Internet Down? How to Check for an Outage and Get Back Online

Tech tip By ITGoNYC techsOct 24, 20266 min read

Your Wi-Fi just quit. The laptop says "No internet," the TV is spinning, and you're wondering if it's Optimum or something in your apartment.

By the end of this guide, you'll know which one it is, you'll be back online with your phone, and you'll know how to ask for money back for the downtime.

The short answer

Look at the lights on your Optimum gateway, then restart it once. If it's still down, use your phone's cellular data to check for an outage in the Optimum app or at optimum.net. If there's an outage, turn on your phone's hotspot to get by, and once service is back, contact Optimum and ask for a credit for the days you were out.

Before you start

  • What you need: your phone with cellular data, your Optimum account login, and access to your gateway (the box Optimum gave you).
  • How long it takes: about 10 minutes to diagnose, 2 minutes to set up a hotspot.
  • Your data is safe. Nothing here erases files or settings. Just don't press the tiny recessed Reset button on the gateway. That wipes your Wi-Fi name and password.

Step 1: Rule out your own equipment

This takes a few minutes and solves a surprising number of "outages."

  1. Check whether it's every device. If your phone on Wi-Fi works but your laptop doesn't, the problem is the laptop, not Optimum.
  2. Look at the gateway's lights. A solid white or green light usually means it's connected. Blinking, red, or orange usually means it can't reach Optimum.
  3. Unplug the gateway's power cord and count to 30.
  4. Plug it back in and wait 5 full minutes. It needs time to reconnect.
  5. Check the coax cable (the round screw-on cable from the wall) and make sure it's finger-tight at both ends.

If the light goes solid and websites load, you're done. It was a hiccup, not an outage. If this keeps happening often, our guide on a router that keeps dropping Wi-Fi walks through the longer-term fixes.

Step 2: Confirm it's an Optimum outage

Turn off Wi-Fi on your phone first, so you're using cellular data.

  1. Open the Optimum app and sign in. Outage alerts for your address usually appear on the home screen or under your internet service.
  2. No app? Go to optimum.net in your phone's browser, sign in, and look for the support or service status section.
  3. Check downdetector.com and search "Optimum." A spike in reports from your area is a strong hint.
  4. Ask a neighbor. In a building full of Optimum customers, a quick text to the person down the hall can confirm it faster than any website.

If Optimum shows an outage, you can stop troubleshooting. Nothing you do at home will fix it, so let's get you online.

Step 3: Get back online with your phone's hotspot

A hotspot turns your phone into a mini Wi-Fi router using your cellular data. Check your phone plan first, because some plans limit hotspot data.

iPhone

  1. Open Settings → Personal Hotspot.
  2. Turn on Allow Others to Join.
  3. Note the Wi-Fi Password shown on that screen.

Android (Samsung)

  1. Open Settings → Connections → Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
  2. Tap Mobile Hotspot to see the network name and password, then turn it on.

Android (Pixel)

  1. Open Settings → Network & internet → Hotspot & tethering → Wi-Fi hotspot.
  2. Turn on Use Wi-Fi hotspot and note the name and password.

Connect your Windows 11 PC

  1. Click the network icon at the bottom-right of the taskbar.
  2. Click the arrow next to the Wi-Fi button, pick your phone's hotspot, and enter the password.
  3. To save data, go to Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi, click the hotspot's name, and turn on Metered connection. Windows will hold off on big updates.

Connect your Mac

  1. Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar.
  2. Your iPhone appears under Personal Hotspot if you're signed into the same Apple Account. Otherwise, pick it from the list and enter the password.
  3. To save data, go to System Settings → Wi-Fi, click Details next to the hotspot, and turn on Low Data Mode.

You should see websites load right away. Skip streaming video and large downloads, since those burn through data fast.

Step 4: Reach Optimum support (safely)

  1. Use the number on your Optimum bill or the contact options inside the app or on optimum.net. Don't call a number from a random search result or ad.
  2. Have your account number and service address ready.
  3. Ask for a ticket or reference number and the estimated restore time.
  4. Sign up for outage text alerts if they offer them, so you'll know when it's fixed.

One warning: outages bring out scammers. Real Optimum support will never ask you to pay with gift cards or crypto, or to install remote-control software to "fix" an outage. If you already tapped a suspicious link in a text, follow our scam text checklist.

Step 5: Request a credit for the downtime

You pay for internet every day of the month, so it's fair to ask for a credit when you don't get it.

  1. Write down when it went out and when it came back. A screenshot of the outage alert works great.
  2. Contact Optimum after service is restored through chat in the app or by phone.
  3. Say it plainly: "My service was out from [date/time] to [date/time]. I'd like a credit on my bill for that time."
  4. Give your ticket number if you have one.
  5. Check your next bill to make sure the credit shows up.

Credits aren't always automatic, so asking is the step most people skip.

Still not working? Try these

If Optimum says the outage is over but you're still offline:

  1. Restart the gateway again. It sometimes needs a fresh start to reconnect after an outage.
  2. Restart your own devices. Phones and laptops can get stuck on the old "no internet" state.
  3. Forget and rejoin the Wi-Fi network on the device that won't connect.
  4. Check for a separate router. If you have your own mesh system plugged into Optimum's gateway, restart that too, gateway first.
  5. Call Optimum back and ask them to check the signal to your gateway. If neighbors are fine and you're not, they may need to send a technician.

Keep it from happening again

  • Know your hotspot settings ahead of time. Set a memorable hotspot password now, not mid-outage.
  • Keep the Optimum app on your phone and turn on notifications so outage alerts reach you.
  • Plug the gateway into a battery backup (UPS) so short power blips don't knock you offline. Our UPS guide explains what to buy.
  • If outages keep interrupting work, compare your options in Fios vs. Spectrum vs. Optimum vs. 5G Home, or consider a backup connection.
