iPhone Duo sold out? How to get one without overpaying or scams

Tech tip By ITGoNYC techsOct 22, 20266 min read

You went to order the new iPhone you've been reading about, the one everyone's searching as the "iPhone Duo," and every option says sold out. Frustrating, especially when you were ready to buy.

By the end of this guide, you'll know the smartest places to find stock, how to avoid the scams that pop up around every hot launch, and how to have your current phone ready so switching takes minutes.

The short answer

Check in-store pickup on Apple's website or the Apple Store app a few times a day, since store inventory changes as shipments arrive. At the same time, ask your carrier and big retailers. If someone online offers one with no wait, be very careful. Sold-out launches are when fake sellers do their best business.

Before you start

  • What you need: your Apple Account login, your carrier account info, and a few minutes a day to check stock.
  • How long it takes: five minutes per check. Prepping your old phone takes about 30 minutes.
  • Back up first: before you trade in, sell, or wipe any phone, make a fresh backup. We walk you through it below.

Step 1: Check store pickup, not just shipping

"Sold out" on the website often means sold out for delivery. Individual stores may still get units in.

  1. Open the Apple Store app or go to apple.com.
  2. Pick the model, size, color, and storage you want.
  3. Look for the pickup or check availability option and enter your ZIP code.
  4. Widen your search to nearby stores. If one shows available, reserve it right away.

If it worked, you'll see a pickup confirmation with a store and time window.

Be a little flexible. A different color or storage size is often in stock when the popular one isn't. In the city, a store two subway stops away might have what yours doesn't.

Step 2: Ask your carrier and major retailers

Apple isn't the only one with stock. Carriers and big-box stores get their own allocations.

  1. Log in to your carrier's app or website and check the new phone listing.
  2. Call or stop by a carrier-owned store (not a third-party dealer) and ask if they're taking orders or can hold one.
  3. Check large, well-known retailers you already trust.
  4. Ask about a backorder. That means you order now and they ship when stock arrives, in order.

A backorder from a real retailer is a safe bet. Your place in line is held and you're not paying a stranger.

Step 3: Check the main stores again at different times

Stock comes in as shipments land, so there's no single magic hour.

  1. Check in the morning, around lunch, and in the evening.
  2. Keep your Apple Account and payment info saved so checkout is fast.
  3. Turn on Face ID or Touch ID for Apple Pay so you can finish in seconds when something opens up.

Step 4: If you're buying from a reseller, protect yourself

This is where people get burned. Hot phones attract fake listings, fake "preorder" websites, and "you've won a free iPhone" texts.

Red flags to walk away from:

  • The price is way below retail for a brand-new, sold-out phone.
  • They want payment by gift card, crypto, Zelle, or wire transfer. A real seller never needs those.
  • They won't meet in person or won't let you power on the phone.
  • A text or email links you to a "special stock" site you've never heard of.

If you already clicked a link in a text like that, follow our scam text checklist.

If you buy in person, meet somewhere busy, like a bank lobby or inside a carrier store, and check these before paying:

  1. Power the phone on and open Settings → General → About. Note the IMEI (the phone's unique ID number).
  2. Make sure it's not tied to the seller's account. Have them erase it in front of you, then confirm it starts at the "Hello" setup screen.
  3. When setting it up, make sure it doesn't ask for someone else's Apple Account. That's Activation Lock, and it means the phone is unusable to you.
  4. Pop in your SIM or try adding your eSIM to confirm it's not locked to another carrier.

If you get scammed, report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov and contact your bank or card company right away.

Step 5: Get your current phone ready while you wait

This is the fun part. When the new one arrives, you'll be set up in no time.

If you have an iPhone now

  1. Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi.
  2. Go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup.
  3. Tap Back Up Now and wait for it to finish.

You should see "Last successful backup" with today's date. On older iOS versions, the menu wording may be slightly different, but it's still under your name at the top of Settings.

When the new phone arrives, Quick Start can move everything over. Just hold the two phones near each other.

If you're switching from Android (Samsung or Pixel)

  1. Back up your phone in Settings → Google → Backup (on Samsung, you can also use Settings → Accounts and backup).
  2. Install the Move to iOS app from the Google Play Store.
  3. During iPhone setup, choose Move Data from Android and follow the prompts.

Move to iOS copies your contacts, messages, photos, and more over Wi-Fi.

If you're trading in your old iPhone

After the new phone is fully set up and you've confirmed everything came over:

  1. Unpair your Apple Watch if you have one.
  2. Go to Settings → [your name] → Sign Out.
  3. Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings.

Signing out first turns off Activation Lock so the next owner can use it.

Still not working? Try these

  • Try a different configuration. A different color or storage size is the most common way to get one sooner.
  • Look at the previous model. It may be discounted now and could do everything you actually need.
  • Ask about Apple's certified refurbished options on apple.com. They're tested and come with a warranty.
  • Try stores a little farther out. A short trip to Long Island or another borough might be worth it.

Keep it from happening again

  • Keep your backup current. Turn on automatic iCloud Backup, and read why sync isn't the same as a backup.
  • Order early next time. Have your account and payment saved before a launch so you're ready the moment orders open.
  • Only buy from sellers you can verify. Apple, your carrier, or a retailer you know.
  • Lock down the new phone on day one. Our 10-minute phone lockdown guide is perfect for a brand-new iPhone.
