Insignia TV remote not working? How to fix it fast

Tech tip By ITGoNYC techsOct 26, 20266 min read

You press buttons, nothing happens. Maybe the light on the remote blinks, maybe it doesn't. Either way, the TV ignores you.

By the end of this guide your Insignia remote will be working again, or you'll know for sure it's dead and what to replace it with.

The short answer

Put in fresh batteries, then unplug the TV from the wall for 60 seconds and plug it back in. That clears most frozen remotes.

If you have an Insignia Fire TV with a voice remote, hold the Home button for 10 seconds to re-pair it. If you have an Insignia Roku TV, it depends on the remote type, which is covered below.

Before you start

  • What you need: fresh batteries (new ones, not from the junk drawer), your phone, and access to the TV's power plug.
  • How long: 5 to 15 minutes.
  • Know your TV type: Most current Insignia TVs run Fire TV. Some run Roku. The home screen tells you which. Fire TV says "fire tv" and shows Amazon apps. Roku shows a purple grid of tiles.
  • No data is at risk here. Nothing you do below erases your apps or logins, except the factory reset at the very end, and I'll flag that.

Step 1: Rule out the batteries and the line of sight

  1. Replace both batteries with a fresh pair. Don't mix old and new.
  2. Check the battery contacts for white or green crust. Wipe it off with a dry cloth or cotton swab.
  3. Clear the path to the TV. Soundbars, decorations, and the edge of a TV stand often block the sensor on the bottom front of the TV. In a tight studio where the soundbar sits right under the screen, this is a common cause.
  4. Stand 5 to 10 feet back and aim straight at the bottom center of the TV.

If it works now, you're done. Weak batteries cause more "broken" remotes than anything else.

Step 2: Power cycle the TV

A TV is a small computer, and it can freeze in a way that makes it stop listening for the remote.

  1. Unplug the TV from the wall outlet, not just the power button.
  2. Wait 60 seconds. This lets the internal power fully drain.
  3. Plug it back in and wait for the home screen to load.
  4. Try the remote.

You should see the TV respond within a few seconds of the home screen appearing.

Step 3: Find out if the remote is sending anything

Basic remotes use infrared (IR), an invisible light beam. Your phone's camera can see it.

  1. Open the camera app on your phone.
  2. Point the remote's front tip at the camera lens and hold down any button.
  3. Look at the screen for a flickering white or purple light at the remote's tip.

On iPhone, use the front (selfie) camera. The rear cameras usually filter out IR. On Samsung and Pixel phones, either camera usually works.

  • You see the flicker: the remote is fine. The problem is the TV's sensor, an obstruction, or interference. Skip to "Still not working?"
  • No flicker: the remote isn't transmitting. Try another set of batteries. If there's still nothing, the remote is likely dead.

Fire TV voice remotes use Bluetooth for most buttons, so no flicker on those doesn't mean they're broken. Go to Step 4.

Step 4: Re-pair the remote

Insignia Fire TV (voice remote)

  1. Hold the Home button for 10 seconds.
  2. Watch the light on the remote. It should blink, and the TV should show that a remote was connected.

If that doesn't work, reset the remote:

  1. Unplug the TV and wait 60 seconds.
  2. Hold Left, Menu (three lines), and Back together for 12 seconds.
  3. Let go, wait 5 seconds, then take the batteries out.
  4. Plug the TV back in and wait for the home screen.
  5. Put the batteries back in and press Home. If it doesn't connect within a minute, hold Home for 10 seconds.

Insignia Roku TV

  • Simple IR remote (no pairing button in the battery compartment): it doesn't pair. If Steps 1 to 3 didn't fix it, the remote is likely the problem.
  • Voice remote (has a small pairing button inside the battery compartment): take out the batteries, put them back in, then hold the pairing button for 5 seconds until the light flashes. Keep it close to the TV.

Step 5: Use your phone as a remote in the meantime

Both TV types can be controlled from your phone over Wi-Fi. This lets you get into menus to add a new remote.

iPhone (current iOS)

  1. Open the App Store and search for Amazon Fire TV or The Roku App (Official), depending on your TV.
  2. Install it and make sure your iPhone is on the same Wi-Fi network as the TV.
  3. Open the app and pick your TV from the list. For Fire TV, type the code shown on the TV screen.

Android (Samsung or Pixel)

  1. Open the Google Play Store and search for the same app name.
  2. Install it and confirm you're on the same Wi-Fi as the TV.
  3. Open the app, choose your TV, and enter the code if asked.

If the app can't find the TV, your Wi-Fi may be the issue. See Router keeps dropping Wi-Fi?

Once you're in, you can add a remote from the menu:

  • Fire TV: Settings → Controllers & Bluetooth Devices → Amazon Fire TV Remotes → Add New Remote.
  • Roku: Settings → Remotes & Devices → Pair new device (for voice remotes).

Still not working? Try these

  1. Volume or power buttons don't work, everything else does (Fire TV): go to Settings → Equipment Control and run the setup for your TV or soundbar so the remote learns those controls.
  2. Check for bright light hitting the TV. Direct sunlight and some LED bulbs can drown out IR signals. Close the blinds or turn off nearby lamps and try again.
  3. Unpair other Bluetooth devices you don't use, like old game controllers or headphones. Then re-pair the remote.
  4. Update the TV software using the phone app. Fire TV: Settings → My Fire TV → About → Check for Updates. Roku: Settings → System → System update.
  5. Use the buttons on the TV. Most Insignia TVs have a power button or small joystick on the bottom edge or back. Use it to confirm the TV itself responds.
  6. Factory reset as a last resort. This erases your apps and sign-ins, so write down your streaming passwords first. Only do this if the TV won't respond to the phone app or a new remote either.

If the remote is truly dead, buy a replacement that matches your TV type. Insignia is Best Buy's house brand, so Best Buy carries matching remotes. A Fire TV remote works with Insignia Fire TVs, and a Roku remote works with Insignia Roku TVs.

Keep it from happening again

  • Swap batteries at the first sign of lag. Sluggish response usually means the batteries are fading.
  • Keep the phone app installed and signed in so you always have a backup remote.
  • Keep the sensor area clear when you rearrange a soundbar or decor.
  • Take batteries out of remotes you won't use for months so they don't leak.

Quick answers

Can I use a universal remote with an Insignia TV? Yes, most universal remotes list Insignia codes. Basic functions like power, volume, and input usually work, but streaming buttons may not.

Why does my Fire TV remote work sometimes and not others? Usually it's weak batteries or Bluetooth interference. Fresh batteries and a re-pair fix most cases.

My phone mirrors to the TV but the remote is dead. Related? No, they're separate systems. If mirroring gives you trouble too, see Screen mirroring not working?
