Fix or replace your laptop? An honest 2026 cost guide for New Yorkers

Tech tip By ITGoNYC techsOct 23, 20263 min read

"Is it worth fixing, or should I just buy a new one?" is the question we get most. A repair shop that always says fix it isn't helping you, and neither is a store that always says replace it. Here's how we actually make the call.

The quick rule: 50% and the operating system

Replace the laptop instead of repairing it when either of these is true:

  1. The repair costs more than about half the price of a comparable new laptop.
  2. It can't run a currently supported operating system. A laptop that no longer gets security updates is a risk every time it goes online — especially for anything involving banking, work email, or client data.

If neither is true, repairing or upgrading is usually the better deal.

Repairs and upgrades that are almost always worth it

Slow laptop → SSD upgrade

If your laptop still has a spinning hard drive (common on budget models and anything older than about six or seven years), swapping it for a solid-state drive is the single biggest speed-up you can buy. Startup goes from minutes to seconds. The drive itself is often under $100 for common sizes, and your files and programs can be moved over intact.

Dying battery

A battery that won't last an hour, shuts off at 30%, or looks swollen (the trackpad bulges, the case doesn't close flat) should be replaced — swollen batteries are a safety issue, stop using it. On most laptops this is a reasonable repair.

Not enough memory

Laptops with 4 GB of RAM struggle with modern browsers. If your model has upgradable memory, going to 8 or 16 GB is cheap and makes a big difference. Many newer laptops have memory soldered to the board, so check before buying anything.

Software rot

Years of updates, startup programs, and bundled junk slow everything down. A cleanup — or a clean reinstall with your files put back — often makes a laptop feel new without spending anything on parts.

When replacing makes more sense

  • The motherboard or logic board failed and the repair is a big chunk of a new laptop's price.
  • Liquid damage reached the board and corrosion is spreading (see our spill guide).
  • The screen is cracked on a cheap laptop — screens on budget models can cost a large share of what the laptop is worth.
  • It can't run Windows 11 or a supported macOS. Windows 10 no longer gets regular support, and while Microsoft's Extended Security Updates program buys time, it's a bridge, not a plan. Windows 11 needs a reasonably modern processor and a TPM 2.0 security chip; many laptops from around 2018 and later qualify, many older ones don't. Macs get security updates for several years after their last supported macOS version, then stop.

How long should a laptop last?

As a rough guide:

  • Budget Windows laptops: 3–5 years.
  • Mid-range and business laptops: 5–7 years, often longer with an SSD and battery along the way.
  • MacBooks: often 6–8 years of useful life, limited mainly by macOS support and battery.

A five-year-old laptop isn't automatically done. A good one with an SSD and a fresh battery can easily go another two or three years.
